Dog Breed Files: All about the Leonberger

Background

Leonbergers are a dog breed of German origin, deriving from the town Leonberg (or Baden-Wurttemberg as it is known as today). This breed is closely related to St. Bernards and has been owned by numerous prominent figures, including Napoleon III, Tsar Alexander II, and King Edward VII. 

As well as being ‘fit-for-royalty’, Leonbergers have also been working dogs on farms, working in the agriculture industry as they are remarkably agile and great swimmers. 

Size and Life Expectancy

This dog breed can grow up to 31.5 inches tall (for males), with their life expectancy being usually around seven years. They are known for being a huge and powerful dog breed.  

Reputation

As well as this reputation, Leonbergers are also loved for having a gentle nature and being a great companion for the whole family. Leonbergers can also make good watchdogs as they are quite intelligent with good judgement. 

Features

Leonbergers have several distinct features, including a long waterproof coat with a bushy tail, triangular-shaped ears, and a black coloured fur around their eyes. Their double coat means Leonbergers have an excessive amount of fur so regular grooming is vital to keep their coat in good condition and help control shedding. 

Required Exercise

In terms of exercise, Leonbergers can be highly energetic, especially when they are puppies, and given their size, they need a large area like a park or large garden to run around at least once a day, so they get the activity they require. 

Dog Training

Due to their overall size and strength, it is important that Leonbergers are properly trained to prevent any negative repercussions, and enhance their ability to be great companions.
