Beauceron vs Doberman

Dobermans are an extremely popular breed. They are loyal and great for protection training. However, many confuse them for another similar-looking breed: the Beauceron. Although they may be similar in many ways, such as their markings, temperament and intelligence, they have distinct differences in background and original purpose. 

Groups

The Beauceron is part of the herding group, whereas Dobermans belong to the working group. Although Beaucerons work with the police and military, they are primarily herding dogs. Dobermans are meant to work with people and protect humans instead of animals. 

History

The Beauceron is many centuries older than the Doberman, as they were first documented in France in the 1500s. They were developed to work as farm dogs, with animals and as guard dogs. Dobermans originated in Germany and are a more recently developed breed. They were created by a German tax collector who wanted a dog to protect him while working 

Similarities

Both breeds are similar in many ways. Many people confuse the two primarily due to their colour and markings, as both have rust marks in the same place and their heights are also similar. Their personalities are similar in the sense that they are loyal, fearless, intelligent, and incredibly attached to their owners. 

Nicknames

Beaucrons have multiple nicknames according to their origin. ‘Berger de Beauce’ translates from French to ‘shepherd of Beauce’, as La Beauce (just outside of Paris) is where the breed originated. ‘Bas Rouge’ translates to ‘red stockings’, highlighting their similar colouring to Dobermans.
