Dog Breed Files: Terriers

The American Kennel Club recognises more than thirty different types of Terriers, each with unique appearances and characteristics. But what makes a terrier a terrier?

Name Origin

The word ‘terrier’ comes from the Latin word ‘terra’, meaning ‘earth’. This name refers to their love of digging and the fact they were originally bred to hunt vermin, like rats, above and below ground.

Here are some examples of different types of Terriers…

West Highland White Terrier

Also known as ‘Westies’, this terrier breed was developed from the Cairn terrier in the 19th century. They were recognised by the American Kennel Club in 1907.

Patterdale Terrier

This breed was developed in the UK. It was recognised by the Royal Kennel Club in 1995, but is not currently recognised by the American Kennel Club.

Border Terrier

The Border Terrier was developed in the 18th Century at the Anglo-Scottish border. They were developed in the countryside and were bred by farmers to hunt foxes that stole sheep and preyed on livestock.
