Prevent Separation Anxiety

It’s natural to want to keep your dog close, but allowing them to sleep in your bed can contribute to separation anxiety. Dogs that are overly dependent on their owners may struggle with being left alone, leading to stress, destructive behaviour, and excessive barking. Establishing a routine where your dog has their own sleeping space helps build confidence and independence, making time apart less distressing for them. 

Be Consistent

Consistency is one of the most critical aspects of dog training. Dogs thrive on routine and clear expectations. For example, if you let your dog on the couch one day but not the next, they will struggle to understand what is expected. Repetition and positive reinforcement helps solidify behaviours, so be patient and persistent. Most importantly, make training sessions enjoyable, turn them into a fun game to keep your dog engaged.

Do Your Research

Before bringing a dog into your home, research the breed thoroughly. Different breeds have different temperaments, exercise needs, and training requirements. A high-energy breed like a Border Collie requires mental stimulation and lots of physical exercise, whereas a Bulldog may prefer a more relaxed lifestyle. Make sure you have the time, space and commitment to meet your dog’s needs so that they can thrive. 

Don’t Over-Rely on Treats and Bribery

Treats are a valuable tool in training, but they should not be the only method you rely on. Treats can work well for reinforcing new behaviours, but once your dog understands a command, transition to using verbal praise or affection as a reward. Avoid using treats as a bribe, your dog should respond to commands because they understand and respect your leadership, not just because they want a snack.

Focus on the Basics First

While it might be tempting to teach your dog flashy tricks like spinning or giving paw, foundational training should always come first. Commands like sit, stay, recall, and loose leash walking are essential for a well-behaved dog. Teaching these basics ensures that your dog has good manners and is safe in various situations. 

Don’t Allow Your Dog to Pull Towards Strangers’ Dogs

It’s common for dogs to get excited when they see another dog, but allowing them to pull towards every dog they meet can lead to problematic behaviour. Not all dogs are friendly, and you never know how another dog will react. Some dogs may be reactive, fearful, or aggressive. Teaching your dog to remain calm and focused on you rather than rushing up to other dogs ensures their safety and reinforces good leash manners.
