Films and TV shows have given us some of the most famous dogs of all time and some of the most iconic dogs come straight from the big screen.

Blair – The First Dog In Film

The first dog in a film was called ‘Blair’ (or Rover), a British Collie who starred in a short film called ‘Rescued by Rover’ in 1905. In the film, the Collie leads his owner to find his baby again. This dog is widely recognised by film critics as the first dog to ever star on the big screen.  

German Shepherds – Frequent Film Stars

Although Collies were the first dog breed featured in cinema, German Shepherds have starred in the most, with 562 film and television credits. Some notable films featuring this breed include I Am Legend, K-9, and A Dog’s Purpose. 

Toto – The Most Famous Dog

Arguably the most famous dog in the world comes from the 1939 film, The Wizard Of Oz. Toto is a Cain Terrier who undertakes an adventure through the Land Of Oz with his owner Dorothy. 

Scooby Doo – Cartoon Great Dane

One of the most famous cartoon dogs is Scooby Doo, a Great Dane. This lovable dog has been helping the Mystery Gang solve mysteries since 1969, reflecting the intelligence of this fantastic breed.
