What are our dog training methods?

In short, we use balanced dog training methods. The dog training world is broken down into two extremes of training. On one side you’ve got force-free positive only and on the other extreme you’ve got Alpha dominance. We don’t agree with either we don’t think that your relationship with a dog or anyone should be based solely on bribery and we certainly don’t think that your relationship with a dog or anyone else should be based on Alpha or dominance. We sit somewhere in the middle.

Parental Leadership

We call it parental leadership. Your dog isn’t a child as it doesn’t develop or process information like a one but we would be kidding ourselves if we didn’t recognize that in most family homes, dogs sit in a childlike position. Children need parenting and so do dogs.

In our opinion, good parenting skills involve a 90% positive relationship and a 10% negative. The 90% positive is where we invest time, energy, money, warmth, care, food, etc… into our children and we should do into our dogs. The 10% negative is what many people struggle with but consider this between the ages of one and eight we learn emotional control from our parents. They shape and mould our responses to the world. They teach us that tantruming doesn’t get us sweets, and we learn an appropriate way to behave. Our parents don’t do that simply through bribery or positive only and good parents certainly don’t do that through dominance either.

To be clear, the 10% negative does not mean hit, kick and scream. While we do need to communicate to the dog when they’ve done the wrong thing, it has to be appropriate so they can learn right from wrong.
